Neuritin belongs to the neuritin family and is expressed in postmitotic-differentiating neurons of the developmental nervous system as well as neuronal structures associated with plasticity in adults. Its expression can be induced by neural activity and neurotrophins. The protein contains a consensus cleavage signal found in glycosylphoshatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins and promotes neurite outgrowth and arborization, indicating its role in promoting neuritogenesis. Overexpression of the protein may be associated with astrocytoma progression. Alternative splicing leads to multiple transcript variants. NRN1 is associated with Severe Congenital Neutropenia 8 and Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Type III.
