Astroviruses have a star-like appearance with five or six points and are non-enveloped, non-segmented RNA viruses (single stranded, positive sense) contained within an icosahedral capsid. The genome is relatively small and has three open reading frames (ORFs). There is no vaccine or anti-viral treatment against the Astrovirus infection and has a very high mutation rate. Human astroviruses have been shown in numerous studies to be an important cause of gastroenteritis in young children worldwide.
