This antibody reacts Cytokeratin 5, Cytokeratin 6, Cytokeratin 8, Cytokeratin 17 and Cytokeratin 19.
Cytokeratins (CKs) are intermediate filament proteins essential for the structural integrity and function of epithelial cells. They are categorized into various types based on their distribution and expression patterns. CK5 is primarily expressed in basal epithelial cells, particularly in the breast, and serves as a marker for basal-like breast carcinomas. CK6, though functionally distinct from CK5, is often studied concurrently due to its expression in squamous cell types and squamous cell carcinomas. CK8 is a marker for luminal epithelial cells and is predominantly expressed in various carcinomas, including hepatocellular carcinoma. CK17 is associated with the basal-like phenotype in certain cancers, notably correlating with poor prognosis in breast cancer and the BRCA1 mutation. CK10 is typically expressed in keratinizing squamous epithelium and is pivotal in skin differentiation. Understanding the differential expression of these cytokeratins aids in the histological diagnosis and prognosis of epithelial carcinomas.
