Human Parechovirus (HPeV) is a single-stranded RNA virus that belongs to the Picornaviridae family. HPeV is a common cause of illness in infants and young children and is transmitted through the fecal-oral route. HPeV Type 1 and Type 3 are the most prevalent strains that cause human infections. The VP0 protein is a structural protein that plays a critical role in the assembly of the virus. The VP0 protein is cleaved into VP2 and VP4 during virus maturation. The n and C terminus of VP0 protein are highly conserved and contain antigenic sites that can be used to develop diagnostic assays and vaccines.
