Phycoerythrin B (PEB) is a type of phycobiliprotein found in certain algae, including red algae and cyanobacteria. It is a fluorescent protein that functions as an accessory pigment in the light-harvesting complexes of photosynthetic organisms. Phycoerythrin B absorbs light primarily in the green-yellow range (approximately 480-580 nm) and emits red fluorescence around 580-700 nm. This pigment is highly efficient in capturing light energy and transferring it to chlorophylls during photosynthesis, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the photosynthetic process, especially underwater where light penetration is limited and green light is more prevalent. PEB's unique optical properties make it a valuable tool in biotechnology applications, such as fluorescent labeling and flow cytometry. The protein is composed of alpha and beta subunits that form hexameric structures, each subunit non-covalently binding linear tetrapyrrole chromophores called phycobilins.
