The spike glycoprotein is the largest of the four major structural proteins found in coronaviruses and contains the S1 and S2 regions. It assembles into trimers that form large structures and mediates viral entry into the host cell. The S1 domain binds to the receptors on the surface of the host cell. The S2 domain contains the necessary components for host cell membrane fusion. The RBD protein bound strongly to human and bat angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors.
