Current vEM methods: From cryo to room temperature

12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Presented by John Mitchels, Sr Manager, Product Marketing

In 2023, there has been renewed interest in 3D volume EM techniques driven by the desire for quantitative structural approaches to understand intercellular dynamics, which are not served completely by light microscopy. Unlike LM, EM allows for a full picture of cellular machinery in a single view and many EM techniques provide 3D data volumes. In this presentation, we will discuss four methods to address a variety of questions from tissues to molecules.

Acquiring high-quality data for single particle analysis or cryo-ET still largely depends on the microscope operator’s ability to judge microscope output and optimize the acquisition process. The dependence on this empirical expertise emphasizes the need for more robust automation and real-time feedback throughout the entire data acquisition process. In this presentation, we will present the latest developments on our solutions for SPA and cryo-ET data acquisition: Thermo Scientific Smart EPU and Tomo/Tomo Live Software. These advancements are aimed to simplify and automate processing and data curation while also opening possibilities for AI automation in both workflows.
