The PPD Carbon Emission Calculator for Clinical Trials is an open-access, evidence-based tool designed to help sponsors and researchers rapidly assess the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with clinical trials.

 

The tool provides a high-level estimate of key trial emission impacts, including investigational product manufacturing, patient travel, sample processing, and site operations. By providing greater visibility into sources of emissions, the tool can help teams compare study designs and operational approaches, enabling them to evaluate opportunities to reduce emissions while maintaining study quality and regulatory compliance.

Carbon footprinting and sustainability assessments

Through our clinical research services, we can support sponsors in understanding the environmental impacts of their clinical trials and evaluating opportunities to reduce emissions. Lower carbon drug manufacturing

Reducing environmental impacts across pharmaceutical manufacturing requires attention to materials, processes, and resource efficiency.


Solvent Recovery

Solvents can represent a significant source of environmental impact in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Through collaboration with customers, Thermo Fisher Scientific has implemented solvent recovery approaches that help reduce waste and associated greenhouse gas emissions. For example, a methanol recovery initiative contributed to a significant greenhouse gas emission reduction.

Single-Use Technologies and Process Efficiency

Single-use technologies (SUTs) can help improve manufacturing flexibility and operational efficiency while reducing the use of resources such as water, energy, and facility space compared with certain traditional stainless-steel systems in many situations.

 

Our bioprocessing experts work with customers to optimize process performance through approaches such as process intensification and facility design strategies that can help reduce water consumption, lower energy demand, minimize reliance on cleaning chemicals, and support smaller facility infrastructure.

One example is the Thermo Scientific DynaSpin Single-Use Centrifuge, which can generate up to 69% less filter waste and up to 74% less liquid waste compared with conventional alternatives in applicable processes.
