Standardizing product environmental impact transparency

Customers are increasingly seeking comparable, third party-certified information to integrate more sustainable practices into their purchasing decisions.  At Thermo Fisher, we prioritize transparency that enables our customers to make informed choices regarding the environmental impact of the products they select. To support this, we aligned our approach with industry standards, emphasizing the use of third-party ecolabels, and disclosure of product carbon footprints (PCFs).

Choosing greener products - look for the leaf

When you see the green leaf symbol on our products, it has met at least one of the following:

  • A minimum My Green Lab® ACT® Ecolabel score of 50
  • ENERGY STAR® certification
  • China Energy Label
  • ISCC PLUS certification
  • Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) certification for all relevant materials

Third-party ecolabels

We monitor voluntary product environmental certifications that are awarded and verified by independent third-party organizations. In 2024, we assessed available ecolabels against several criteria including customer expectations. Thermo Fisher has accepted five ecolabels for use with our products.  

My Green Lab® ACT® Ecolabel

The ACT Ecolabel uses a science-based, 100-point weighted score, with details on product impacts such as energy use, materials, chemical hazards, end-of-use options, and product carbon footprint – plus an evaluation of the manufacturing facility and company commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

ISCC PLUS certification

ISCC PLUS certification is a comprehensive scheme under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system that includes the sustainability and traceability of biobased and recycled content in products.

 

ENERGY STAR® certification

ENERGY STAR® is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency. The blue ENERGY STAR label provides simple, credible, and unbiased information that consumers and businesses rely on to make well-informed decisions.

Lab-grade refrigerators and freezers are eligible for ENERGY STAR.

China Energy Label

The China Energy Label is an energy consumption label for products established by the China Energy Label Center (CELC) authority.  Products are tested in a qualified laboratory to determine their level of energy efficiency, from 1 to 5.  Lab-grade refrigerators and freezers are eligible for the China Energy Label.

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) certification

FSC sets standards for responsible forest management to protect forests for future generations.  FSC chain-of-custody certification indicates that chain-of-custody requirements for traceability are met at every step of the supply chain.  FSC sets standards and criteria that are audited by third-party certification bodies.

Product Carbon Footprint

We recognize the need for improvements in data accuracy for calculating greenhouse gas emissions – and particularly to transition to specific product data.
 

Thermo Fisher has developed a system-level methodology capable of determining product carbon footprints (PCFs) across our large and diverse product portfolio including lab products, analytical instruments, specialty diagnostics, and contracted pharmaceuticals.


The methodology has been independently verified to be in conformance with two leading standards, ISO 14067:2018 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard, 2011. Additionally, it is verified to a limited level of assurance to the Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) Methodology for Calculating and Exchanging Cradle-to-Gate Carbon Footprints (PCFs), version 3.0, March 2025, short-term verification requirements. PCFs for over 140,000 products are available as of May 2026. We are evaluating more effective methods to share PCFs at scale and will provide updates here once available.

As an alternative pathway to support scope 3 data maturity, Thermo Fisher will continue to provide customer greenhouse gas reports for the goods and services purchased. The report is aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard and may be used in a scope 3 category 1 inventory. To request this report, please contact us.
