Target Information
Chlordecone (C10Cl10H2O2), an organochlorine pesticide, was extensively used in the French West Indies from 1972 to 1993, primarily for controlling the banana black weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus. Despite its ban, chlordecone remains a persistent environmental pollutant due to its high resistance to degradation. The compound and its metabolite, chlordecol (CLD-OH), continue to be detected in the environment, posing significant toxicity risks. Research has focused on evaluating the toxicity of chlordecone and its metabolites, as well as exploring bioremediation strategies to mitigate its environmental impact. Chlordecone's structure consists of ten chlorine atoms, two hydrogen atoms, and two oxygen atoms, contributing to its stability and persistence in soil and water systems.
