Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a notifiable disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium bovis which infects the lungs and associated lymph nodes although lesions can be found in any organ or body cavity of diseased animals. Infection is often sub-clinical. bTB has a prolonged course and symptoms take months-years to appear making the diagnosis of the disease complex.
It is found primarily in cattle but can also be found in cervids (deer and elk), bison, goats, carnivores (coyotes) and omnivores (badgers); any warm-blooded animal including humans can be affected by the disease. Transmission of M. bovis within and between species is mainly by the airborne route or by ingestion of the bacterium (in humans by drinking raw milk).
The standard method for detection of Tuberculosis is the tuberculin test, where a small amount of antigen is injected into the skin and the immune reaction (swelling) is measured. The Tuberculin PPD Kit has both Bovine & Avian Tuberculin PPD.
