Presumptively identify Escherichia coli from food, water and environmental samples with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Lauryl Tryptose Broth w/MUG (Dehydrated). The MUG (4-methylumbelliferyl-ß-D-glucuronide) is cleaved by the enzyme glucuronidase (GUD) produced by Escherichia coli resulting in a fluorescent end-product.
Escherichia coli is a common Gram-negative microorganism which may be present in food and water samples. The presence of E.coli cells may be indicative of fecal contamination, although their ingestion does not necessarily have adverse effects on health. Nevertheless, certain strains are responsible for diarrhoeal disease and can also lead to more serious forms of illness.
Lauryl Tryptose Broth with MUG provides a selective medium which is used for the detection of coliform organisms in water, dairy products and other foods and with the addition of MUG is a Standard Methods medium recommended by FDA/BAM1.
