Detect helminth ova and larvae in wet mount preparations, and differentiates parasitic cysts from host white blood cells with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ BactiDrop™ Lugol's Iodine. The diagnosis of intestinal parasitic infections is confirmed by the recovery and microscopic identification of intestinal pathogens from fecal specimens. In wet mount preparations, BactiDrop Lugol's Iodine is a rapid, non-specific, contrast dye, added to fresh, unpreserved fecal specimens to aid in detection of helminth eggs and larvae and in differentiating parasitic cysts from host white blood cells1,2.

BactiDrop Lugol's Iodine stain is used to detect helminth ova and larvae. It is added to 70% ethanol to prepare ethanol-iodine mixture that is part of the trichrome stain procedure. BactiDrop Lugol’s Iodine added to 70% ethanol also removes the mercuric chloride used in some fecal preservatives, such as PVA and Schaudinn’s fixative. Fecal specimen wet mounts prepared with BactiDrop Lugol’s Iodine have more visibility of the nuclei of protozoan cysts, however trophozoites are usually distorted. Helminth eggs and larvae are recognizable in wet mounts, though iodine staining occasionally obscures the internal morphologic details.Concentrated BactiDrop Lugol’s Iodine needs to be diluted before staining wet mounts to prevent coagulation of fecal particles and maintain the refractile nature of some parasites3. The reagent is supplied as 0.75 mL ampules. This reagent have been tested using quality control procedure and found to be acceptable. Not all products are available for sale in all territories.
