Remel™ Frey Mycoplasma Broth Base

Cultivate avian Mycoplasma species using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Frey Mycoplasma Broth Base (Dehydrated). The medium requires the addition of sterile, inactivated horse serum. Additional supplements may also be required. Hayflick and Chanock described a medium containing yeast extract and horse serum for cultivation¹ and identified Mycoplasma as agents of human disease. Frey replaced beef extract present in the previous media formulations with soy peptone and increase the concentration of yeast extract².

Mycoplasmas, formerly known as pleuropneumonia-like organisms or PPLO, are a group of filterable, fastidious microorganisms which lack a rigid cell wall. Mycoplasma’s existence has been recognised since 1898 and they were also determined as the causative agent of bovine pleuropneumonia.  

This medium contains yeast extract and peptones which supply the nutrients required for the growth of mycoplasmas. Sodium chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains osmotic equilibrium. Potassium chloride and magnesium sulfate supply essential ions. Dipotassium phosphate and monopotassium phosphate are buffers.
