NF-kappa-B inhibitor-like protein 1 (NFKBIL1), also named Ikb like and IkbL1, is a 381 amino acid member of the inhibitor of NF-kappaB (IkappaB) family of proteins. NFKBIL1 contains two ANK repeats and is expressed in the rheumatoid synovial lining and sub-lining layers and co-localized in CD68+ and CD3+, but not Factor VIII+ cells. It is reported that defects in NFKBIL1 expression causes of susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is a systemic inflammatory disease with autoimmune features and affects the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by inflammatory changes in the synovial membranes and articular structures, widespread fibrinoid degeneration of the collagen fibers in mesenchymal tissues, and by atrophy and rarefaction of bony structures.
