Sequence of this protein is as follows: ATKVRRHDMR VHPYQRI
The QKI gene, also known as Quaking, encodes an RNA-binding protein that plays a critical role in myelination, as it is predominantly expressed in oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells. The QKI protein is involved in the regulation of mRNA stability, splicing, and export, which influences the development and differentiation of the nervous system. The QKI gene produces several isoforms, including QKI-5, QKI-6, and QKI-7, each having distinct functions and expression patterns. QKI-5, one of the major isoforms, is primarily located in the nucleus where it regulates RNA processing events essential for cell development and function. Mutations or dysregulation of the QKI gene have been implicated in various neurological disorders, including schizophrenia and myelin-related diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
