ABP1, also called Auxin-binding protein 1, is a plant protein that binds the hormone auxin, especially indole-3-acetic acid, to influence rapid cellular responses. It is located mainly in the endoplasmic reticulum and the apoplast and is linked to regulation of ion fluxes, cell expansion, and endocytosis that affects the trafficking of PIN auxin transporters. ABP1 can interact with cell surface transmembrane kinases to convert extracellular auxin signals into cytoplasmic responses. While nuclear TIR1 and AFB proteins control transcriptional auxin signaling, ABP1 is associated with rapid, nontranscriptional pathways. Genetic studies in Arabidopsis initially suggested strong developmental roles, but later knockouts were viable with modest phenotypes, indicating possible redundancy or context dependent function. ABP1 remains important for understanding fast auxin signaling and coordination of growth in plant tissues.
