AKINB1 (AKINbeta1) encodes a non-catalytic regulatory beta subunit of the Arabidopsis SnRK1 energy-sensing protein kinase complex and is predominantly a soluble intracellular protein that partitions among the cytoplasm and nucleus but is also targeted to the Golgi apparatus in a manner influenced by N-myristoylation. Functionally, AKINB1 serves as a scaffold/adaptor within the heterotrimeric SnRK1 complex, promoting assembly and tuning subcellular localization of kinase complexes with the catalytic alpha and regulatory gamma-type subunits, thereby shaping downstream signaling outputs under changing nutrient and environmental conditions. Consistent with conserved beta-subunit architecture described for SnRK1/AMPK/SNF1 families, AKINB1 is characterized by interaction modules that mediate binding to other SnRK1 subunits and contribute to substrate targeting, and genetic perturbation of AKINB1 alters central metabolism and transcriptional programs, including effects on organic acid (TCA cycle-associated) metabolism and broad modulation of genes involved in carbon, lipid, and nitrogen metabolism and sugar-responsive regulation.
