Functionally, AUX1 operates as a high-affinity auxin influx carrier that helps establish and maintain local auxin maxima and directional auxin flow in concert with efflux systems, thereby supporting multiple auxin-dependent developmental programs; classic loss-of-function phenotypes include impaired root gravitropism and defects in lateral root initiation/positioning, reflecting AUX1's role in regulating auxin availability in outer root tissues (e.g., lateral root cap and epidermis) that coordinate organ patterning and growth responses.
