Alpha-hemolysin, also known as Hla, is a protein encoded by the hla gene in Staphylococcus aureus, a common pathogenic bacterium. The hla gene is located on the chromosome of Staphylococcus aureus. Alpha-hemolysin is a beta-barrel pore-forming toxin that disrupts the plasma membranes of host cells by creating transmembrane pores, leading to cell lysis and death. It plays a critical role in S. aureus pathogenicity by destroying red blood cells (hemolysis), white blood cells, and epithelial cells, facilitating tissue infection and immune evasion. The structure of alpha-hemolysin consists of a heptameric pore formed by seven identical monomers, each contributing a beta-strand to the formation of the pore.
