Bovine Coronavirus (BCoV) is a betacoronavirus affecting cattle, associated with both gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases. The gastrointestinal form causes neonatal calf diarrhea (calf scours) and winter dysentery in adult cattle, while the respiratory form contributes to bovine respiratory disease complex (shipping fever) affecting cattle of all ages. BCoVs exist as quasispecies without distinct genetic or antigenic markers distinguishing the clinical syndromes they cause. The virus is characterized by high morbidity but low mortality, with diagnosis typically based on serological or molecular methods. There is no registered antiviral treatment, so management relies on supportive therapy and preventative measures. BCoVs were also used as model viruses to study the survival potential of SARS-CoV-2 on various surfaces.
