Bupirimate is a systemic fungicide primarily used for controlling powdery mildew in crops. It functions by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes, thereby disrupting fungal growth and reproduction. The chemical structure of bupirimate includes a pyrimidine ring, which is crucial for its fungicidal activity. Bupirimate is metabolized into ethirimol, which also possesses fungicidal properties. The gene location and specific genetic interactions of bupirimate are not well-documented, but its efficacy and residue dynamics have been studied to ensure food safety and minimize environmental impact. Studies have shown that bupirimate undergoes photochemical degradation when exposed to atmospheric oxidants, which affects its persistence and activity in agricultural settings.
