The CFAP221 gene (Cilia and Flagella Associated Protein 221) encodes a protein that is likely involved in the structure and function of cilia and flagella. These are hair-like structures on the surface of cells that play critical roles in cell movement and signaling. Cilia are found on many types of cells throughout the body and are especially important in the respiratory tract, where they help move mucus out of the lungs, and in the reproductive system. Mutations or dysfunctions in CFAP221 can lead to ciliary dyskinesias or other disorders associated with impaired ciliary function, affecting respiratory health, fertility, and other systems dependent on proper ciliary function.
