COX2b (prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2b) encodes an inducible cyclooxygenase isoform that localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, positioning the enzyme at intracellular sites of eicosanoid production. In zebrafish, the gene comprises multiple exons and produces a heme-dependent, membrane-associated oxidoreductase that carries the conserved residues required for cyclooxygenase and peroxidase catalysis, consistent with a functional prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase. Biologically, COX2b catalyzes the committed early steps of prostanoid biosynthesis by converting arachidonic acid to the unstable endoperoxide intermediate that is further processed into prostaglandins and related lipid mediators, thereby contributing to inflammation-associated signaling and broader physiological responses to stimuli and oxidative stress; its transcript also contains AU-rich elements in the 3 untranslated region that are characteristic of inducible, post-transcriptionally regulated COX2-type messages, supporting rapid, stimulus-responsive changes in expression.
