Class-I MHC-restricted T cell-associated molecule (CRTAM) is a gene located on chromosome 11q24.2, encoding a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily that plays a crucial role in immune cell interactions. CRTAM is expressed on activated CD8+ T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and some subsets of CD4+ T cells, where it is involved in promoting cell adhesion, cytokine production, and cytotoxic responses. The protein binds to Necl-2 (CD112), mediating intercellular communication that influences immune responses, particularly in the context of viral infections and tumor surveillance. CRTAM's involvement in directing immune cell activity highlights its importance in the regulation of adaptive and innate immunity. Research into CRTAM is exploring its potential as a therapeutic target for modulating immune functions, aiming to enhance immune responses against cancer and infectious diseases or to attenuate autoimmune reactions.
