CSD2 encodes a Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase that is targeted to plastids and functions predominantly in the chloroplast (notably the stroma, with reports of additional plastid-associated localizations), placing it at a major site of photosynthesis-linked reactive oxygen species production. The gene produces a nuclear-encoded protein with an N-terminal chloroplast transit peptide followed by a conserved Cu/Zn SOD catalytic domain that binds copper and zinc and forms the characteristic SOD fold; enzyme activation in planta requires copper delivery via the copper chaperone for SOD (CCS). Biologically, CSD2 catalyzes dismutation of superoxide (O2- ) to hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, thereby limiting oxidative damage and contributing to cellular redox homeostasis and stress tolerance under conditions that elevate chloroplast superoxide generation (e.g., high light and other oxidative challenges).
