Calcineurin is a calcium and calmodulin dependent protein phosphatase best known from fungi and animals, where it dephosphorylates targets to control stress adaptation, ion homeostasis, and transcription. In plants, classical calcineurin A B heterotrimeric complexes are not present, but calcineurin like activities are carried out by related protein phosphatases and by calcineurin B like proteins that bind calcium and interact with protein kinases to relay calcium signals. These plant modules regulate growth, hormone responses, and stress tolerance by decoding calcium transients and adjusting gene expression and transport processes.
