Citreoviridin is a potent mycotoxin synthesized by highly reducing polyketide synthases, identified within the biosynthetic gene cluster of Aspergillus terreus var. aureus. Structurally, it belongs to the class of F1-ATPase beta-subunit inhibitors, characterized by an alpha-pyrone polyene structure. Citreoviridin is known to inhibit mitochondrial ATPase, and has been isolated from molded yellow rice, linked to Shoshin-kakke, a human disease resulting from thiamine deficiency. This compound shares structural similarities with other mycotoxins such as aurovertin, verrucosidin, and asteltoxin, and its biosynthesis has been reconstituted for further study.
