DNABII proteins are a family of highly conserved bacterial DNA-binding proteins that include Integration Host Factor (IHF) and Histone-like protein (HU). These proteins bind and bend double-stranded DNA, playing essential roles in DNA replication, recombination, repair, and transcriptional regulation. In addition to their intracellular functions, DNABII proteins are key structural components of bacterial biofilms. They stabilize extracellular DNA (eDNA) within the biofilm matrix, contributing to biofilm integrity and persistence. Because of this structural role, DNABII proteins are being explored as potential therapeutic targets for disrupting biofilms in chronic and antibiotic-resistant infections.
