The DPPA2 (Developmental Pluripotency Associated 2) gene is prominently expressed in embryonic stem cells and is critical for maintaining their pluripotency and self-renewal capabilities. Located on chromosome 3, DPPA2 belongs to a family of genes that play significant roles in early embryonic development and epigenetic remodeling. The expression of DPPA2 is tightly regulated through mechanisms such as DNA methylation, and it is involved in regulatory pathways that control the expression of core pluripotency factors. Beyond its role in stem cell biology, DPPA2 expression is also noted in various cancers, where it can become reactivated, suggesting its involvement in oncogenic processes. In the context of cancer, DPPA2, along with DPPA4, has been studied for its potential to facilitate cellular reprogramming and contribute to tumorigenesis. Given its expression pattern, DPPA2 serves as both a marker of pluripotent potential in stem cells and a potential target for cancer diagnostics and therapy due to its reactivation in malignant tissues.
