Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a synthetic organochlorine compound that was widely used as an insecticide, particularly after World War II, to control malaria and typhus. Structurally, DDT is composed of two phenyl rings connected by a trichloroethane moiety, giving it the chemical formula C14H9Cl5. Its persistence in the environment and bioaccumulation in the food chain led to its ban in many countries due to adverse ecological and health effects. DDT primarily acts on the nervous system of insects by opening sodium channels in neurons, causing spasms and eventual death. Despite its ban, DDT and its metabolites, such as DDE and DDD, continue to be detected in various environmental matrices, including water and air, due to their long degradation periods.
