Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) is an organic compound belonging to the phthalate family, widely used as a plasticizer in the manufacturing of plastics to improve flexibility, durability, and longevity. It is also applied as a solvent and a component in insect repellents, particularly effective against mosquitoes. Structurally, DMP consists of two methyl ester groups attached to a phthalate backbone, contributing to its physicochemical properties. Due to its widespread use, DMP is a concern for environmental and human health as it can leach into air, soil, and water systems, leading to potential exposure through inhalation, ingestion, or dermal contact. Studies have indicated its potential to disrupt endocrine functions, although DMP is considered less biologically active compared to other phthalates. The biodegradability and toxicity profiles of DMP are subjects of environmental impact assessments, highlighting the necessity for monitoring its presence in ecosystems and consumer products. Regulations and guidelines have been established in many regions to manage its use and mitigate exposure risks, supporting ongoing research into safer alternatives and sustainable practices.
