Doramectin is a 16-membered macrocyclic lactone used extensively in veterinary medicine for the treatment of parasitic infections in mammals. It is produced through the fermentation of Streptomyces avermitilis, a bacterium known for its ability to synthesize avermectins. Doramectin functions by binding to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, which are crucial for its insecticidal activity. The structure of doramectin includes hydrogen bonds at the C4' position, enhancing its efficacy against parasites. It is available in injectable and pour-on formulations, primarily for cattle, and has been the subject of various studies aiming to improve its production and efficacy through genetic and chemical modifications.
