Elastase 3, also known as pancreatic elastase 3 or ELA3, is an enzyme encoded by the CELA3A and CELA3B genes in humans. This enzyme is a member of the serine protease family and is primarily produced in the pancreas. Elastase 3 plays a critical role in the digestive process by breaking down proteins into smaller peptides, specifically targeting elastin, a key protein component of connective tissue. It is secreted into the small intestine, where it aids in the efficient digestion of dietary proteins. Elastase 3 has significant clinical relevance as its levels can be measured in stool samples to assess pancreatic function. Low levels of elastase 3 in the stool are indicative of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), a condition where the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes, leading to malabsorption and nutrient deficiencies. This enzyme is also of interest in research related to various gastrointestinal disorders and pancreatic diseases, including chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
