Enramycin, also known as enduracidin, is a polypeptide antibiotic primarily used as a safe animal feed additive. It is produced by the bacterium Streptomyces fungicidicus and exhibits potent antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria. Enramycin functions by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, specifically targeting the lipid II precursor, which is crucial for peptidoglycan biosynthesis. Structurally, enramycin is composed of cyclic peptide chains that contribute to its stability and efficacy. The gene responsible for enramycin production is located within the Streptomyces genome, and its biosynthesis involves complex enzymatic pathways. Enramycin's purification process involves macroporous resin adsorption and reversed phase chromatography, ensuring high purity for its application in animal feeds. Despite its effectiveness, the emergence of antimicrobial resistance poses challenges to its long-term utility.
