Ethopabate is an antiparasitic agent used primarily in veterinary medicine to control coccidiosis, a disease caused by protozoan parasites affecting poultry. Its mechanism involves disrupting the folate metabolism in coccidia parasites by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme vital for DNA synthesis. As a result, ethopabate prevents the proliferation of these parasites, aiding in the management of intestinal infections. Structurally, ethopabate is a p-aminobenzoic acid analogue, contributing to its competitive inhibition of folate pathways. Ethopabate is commonly administered in combination with other anticoccidial drugs to enhance efficacy and limit resistance development. Research has demonstrated its integration into feed formulations for optimal prophylactic effect. Despite its widespread use, safety evaluations have indicated minimal residue concerns when appropriately applied, ensuring safe meat and egg production. Ethopabates role in maintaining poultry health is crucial, supporting both economic and nutritional aspects of poultry farming.
