Fel d 1, commonly known as Felcat allergen 1, is a major allergen produced by domestic cats (Felis catus). Fel d 1 is primarily secreted by sebaceous glands present in the skin and is found in higher concentrations in male cats due to androgen regulation. This protein is a tetramer formed by two heterodimers, each consisting of chains 1 and 2, encoded by the CH1 and CH2 genes. The structure of Fel d 1 includes disulfide bridges which contribute to its stability. This allergen is responsible for a significant number of allergic reactions in humans, causing symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and asthma. Understanding the structure and production of Fel d 1 is essential for developing therapies and preventive measures for cat allergies.
