Fenpropathrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide widely used in agriculture and household settings. It is known for its neurotoxic effects, particularly its ability to induce degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, which can mimic the pathological features of Parkinson's disease. Fenpropathrin is rapidly metabolized in organisms, including rats, through processes such as ester linkage cleavage, oxidation, and conjugation with sulfuric acid, glucuronic acid, and amino acids. The compound has been detected in aquatic environments, where it has shown neurotoxic impacts on non-target organisms like common carp, causing abnormal locomotor behavior. The CN group in fenpropathrin undergoes metabolic conversion to SCN ion, similar to other pyrethroids. Its structure includes a cyano group and a phenoxybenzyl alcohol moiety, contributing to its insecticidal properties.
