Fluoxetine, commonly known as Prozac, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) developed by Eli Lilly and Company. It is primarily used to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other psychological conditions. Fluoxetine functions by inhibiting the serotonin transporter (SERT), thereby increasing serotonin levels in the brain. The gene regulatory changes associated with fluoxetine have been characterized through multi-omics analyses, revealing its impact on various brain regions. The drug's pharmacogenetics indicate that genetic variations can influence its efficacy and response in patients. Fluoxetine also promotes adult neurogenesis, particularly in the hippocampus, which is mediated by the 5-HT3 receptor. This structural plasticity is crucial for its therapeutic effects in treating depression and other CNS disorders.
