Fluroxypyr is a widely used herbicide known for its efficacy in controlling broad-leaved weeds in agricultural settings such as wheat, corn, and rice fields. Structurally, it exists as a pair of enantiomers, namely (+)-Fluroxypyr methylheptyl ester and (-)-Fluroxypyr methylheptyl ester, which are hydrolyzed to form fluroxypyr (FP), an achiral molecule with herbicidal properties. Fluroxypyr is absorbed and translocated within plants, contributing to its effectiveness. It has been noted for its lower toxicity compared to similar herbicides like 2,4-D, making it a safer alternative for applications such as citrus fruit preservation. However, its intensive use has led to contamination concerns in soils and aquatic ecosystems, necessitating studies on its bioaccumulation and degradation, particularly in organisms like green algae.
