Flurtamone is a chiral pesticide known for its enantiomeric properties, primarily used as a bleaching herbicide that targets phytoene desaturase, thereby inhibiting the formation of alpha- and beta-carotene and xanthophylls in plants. The R-enantiomer of flurtamone exhibits significantly higher bioactivity compared to its S-enantiomer, contributing predominantly to its herbicidal effects. This selective inhibition leads to the accumulation of phytoene, a precursor to colored carotenoids, affecting the plant's photosynthetic capabilities. Flurtamone's enantiomers also play a role in influencing microbial antibiotic resistance gene dissemination, highlighting its environmental impact beyond herbicidal activity.
