Helicobacter pylori babA is a gene encoding the BabA adhesin a protein that enables the bacterium to adhere to the gastric mucosa by binding to Lewis b blood group antigens. This adhesion is critical for colonization and contributes to the pathogenicity of H. pylori. Variations in the babA gene such as the babA2 allele have been linked to differences in binding affinity and disease outcomes including an increased risk of ulcers and gastric malignancies .
