Helicobacter pylori babA2 refers to a gene variant encoding the blood group antigen-binding adhesin (BabA) a protein that mediates the adherence of H. pylori to the gastric epithelium. BabA recognizes and binds to Lewis b antigens on the surface of stomach epithelial cells facilitating colonization and persistence of the bacterium. The presence of the babA2 gene is associated with increased virulence and a higher risk of developing peptic ulcers and gastric cancer .
