Higenamine is a plant-based alkaloid belonging to the structural class of protoberberines, initially isolated as the active cardiotonic component from Aconitum by Kosuge in 1976. It is a chiral compound with one asymmetric carbon, typically found as a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, (S)-(-)-higenamine and (R)-(+)-higenamine. The empirical formula of higenamine is C16H17NO3, with a molecular weight of 271.272. Higenamine is known for its pharmacological properties, including its role as a beta-adrenergic receptor agonist, which contributes to its cardiotonic effects. It has been studied for its pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in healthy volunteers, highlighting its potential clinical applications in treating cardiovascular diseases. However, further research is needed to optimize its clinical use while ensuring safety and efficacy.
