Hyoscyamine is a tropane alkaloid extracted from the leaves of Hyoscyamus niger and other plants like Scopolia lurida, known for its diverse pharmacological properties including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-convulsive, hypotensive, and anticholinergic effects. The gene encoding hyoscyamine 6-beta-hydroxylase (H6H), an enzyme crucial in the biosynthesis of tropane alkaloids, has been cloned from Hyoscyamus niger and Scopolia lurida, and overexpressed in hairy root cultures to enhance production. Structurally, hyoscyamine is characterized by its ability to decrease gastrointestinal tract motion and secretion, making it effective in treating various disorders such as bladder spasms, peptic ulcer disease, diverticulitis, colic, irritable bowel syndrome, cystitis, and pancreatitis. Furthermore, hyoscyamine is utilized as an anticholinergic agent in managing Parkinson's disease and genitourinary symptoms.
