Specific Species Reactivity: Arabidopsis thaliana (recombinant ICS1)
ICS1 is a nuclear-encoded Arabidopsis thaliana gene whose product is targeted to plastids, accumulating as a stromal chloroplast enzyme. It produces a soluble isochorismate synthase polypeptide of roughly 570 amino acids that contains the conserved chorismate/aminodeoxychorismate synthase (ADC) superfamily catalytic region typical of isochorismate synthases. Functionally, ICS1 catalyzes the Mg2+-dependent conversion of chorismate to isochorismate, providing a key committed step in the isochorismate-derived pathway of salicylic acid biosynthesis that is strongly induced during pathogen challenge and required for robust salicylic acid accumulation and downstream defense programs, including systemic acquired resistance. In addition to its central role in immune-associated salicylic acid production, genetic and physiological studies support broader contributions of ICS1 activity to chloroplast-associated metabolism and stress-linked chloroplast performance.
