IL-18 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is synthesized as an inactive precursor and becomes biologically active after proteolytic cleavage. Cleavage at or near Tyr37 generates the mature cytokine, which stimulates IFN-gamma production and promotes innate and adaptive immune responses, particularly during infection and inflammation.
