ISL LIM Homeobox 2 (ISL2) is a gene located on chromosome 15q23 that encodes a transcription factor belonging to the LIM-homeodomain family. These transcription factors play critical roles in the regulation of gene expression during embryonic development, particularly in the differentiation and maintenance of neuronal and pancreatic cell lineages. ISL2 is specifically involved in the development of the nervous system, where it contributes to motor neuron differentiation and connectivity, as well as in the development of certain retinal structures. The protein functions by binding to specific DNA sequences, thereby influencing the transcription of target genes essential for cellular differentiation and identity. Although less studied than its paralog ISL1, ISL2's expression and roles in developmental pathways are crucial for proper organogenesis and tissue specification. Dysregulation of ISL2 has potential implications in developmental disorders and diseases involving neural and pancreatic tissues. Ongoing research aims to further elucidate its functions and potential as a therapeutic target in developmental biology and disease.
