Imazalil is a systemic fungicide belonging to the imidazole class, widely used in agriculture to control fungal diseases, especially those affecting fruits like citrus and bananas. Its primary mode of action involves inhibiting ergosterol biosynthesis within fungal cell membranes, which is essential for their integrity and functionality. By disrupting this pathway, imazalil effectively prevents the growth and proliferation of a broad spectrum of fungi, including post-harvest pathogens such as Penicillium species that cause fruit rots. Imazalil is applied both pre- and post-harvest to ensure protection against fungal decay and extend the shelf life of produce. Its usage is subject to regulatory limits to ensure residue levels remain safe for consumers. While generally effective, environmental and health safety evaluations are conducted to monitor its impact, leading to the development of guidelines for safe application and residue management. Ongoing research focuses on optimizing imazalil formulations, resistance management, and exploring its effects on non-target organisms to support sustainable agricultural practices.
