Isometamidium chloride, commonly known as Samorin, is a veterinary trypanocide used both prophylactically and therapeutically to combat trypanosome infections, particularly in livestock. Structurally, it is a conjugate of homidium and part of the berenil molecule, which contributes to its efficacy against Trypanosoma species such as T. congolense, T. brucei, and T. vivax. The drug's mechanism involves interfering with the DNA of the parasite, leading to its death. Recent studies have focused on developing long-acting formulations of Isometamidium chloride, such as lipid nanoparticles, to enhance its therapeutic effects and reduce resistance. These advancements aim to improve the drug's bioavailability and prolong its action in the host organism.
